Matting Matters

Are Your Entrance Mats doing Their Job?

As the First Line of Defense for Your Floors, Matting Matters

Winter weather brings more than just cold temperatures—it also brings dirt, salt, and moisture into your facility.

The right matting system is your first line of defense, preventing mud, snow & slush, salt residue, and debris from making its way onto your carpets and floors. But not all mats are created equal. A well-designed system combines different types of mats to maximize effectiveness:

  • Scraper Grid/Mat – Placed outside the entrance to capture heavy debris, dirt, and salt before it even enters the building.
  • Grass or Fiber Mat – Positioned in the vestibule to absorb moisture and trap remaining dirt.
  • Fiber Mat – Installed in the lobby to catch any lingering soil that might still be on shoes.

According to Stan Hulin, CEO of Future Floor Technology Inc., “Mats themselves are effective, but they’re even more effective when combined with length.”

Experts recommend at least 10 to 12 feet of matting for three full steps of cleaning action, while 25 feet is ideal for removing nearly 100% of incoming soil and dirt.

Since long entry mats aren’t always practical, some carpet manufacturers are integrating walk-off carpets into their designs—these mats can be Velcroed to the floor for easy replacement and cleaning.

Sustainable options are also on the rise, with mats made from recycled materials and advanced fibers designed to remove more debris from shoes.
