Hi everyone, Steve here with this month’s Culture Corner.

Forget fancy gadgets or productivity hacks – this month, we’re tackling a true life-changer that applies to everyone, regardless of profession or background: effective communication.

We all communicate, but how often do we do it well? We’ve all experienced frustrating misunderstandings, missed connections, or simply felt unheard. That’s why communication deserves more than just passing attention.

As communication expert Joel Garfinkle points out, verbal and written interactions make up a whopping 90% of our daily lives. He defines effective communication as “the exchange of thoughts, information, ideas, and messages between people or groups.”

But here’s the key: it’s not communication unless it’s understood.

So, how do we become better communicators? Garfinkle offers a powerful 7-step framework:

1.  Be crystal clear: Know your message inside out. What are you trying to convey? Don’t leave your audience guessing.
2.  Listen actively: Communication is a two-way street. Truly hear and understand the other person, and actively engage in the conversation.
3.  Take responsibility: It’s not just about what you say, but how it’s received. You are 100% responsible for ensuring your message is understood.
4.  Be present: Give the conversation your full attention. Put away distractions and focus on connecting with the other pers
5.  Encourage clarity: Asking someone to rephrase or clarify their points isn’t rude, it’s helpful. This ensures understanding and avoids confusion.
6.  Respect is key: Treat others with the same respect you expect for yourself. This creates a positive and open environment for communication.
7.  Keep learning: Communication is a lifelong journey. Continuously seek new knowledge and strategies to improve your skills.
